Homemade Seafood Boil Recipe | Snow Crab, Shrimp, Mussels & Sausage
Make the ultimate homemade seafood boil with snow crab legs, shrimp, mussels, smoked sausage, corn, potatoes, and a flavorful garlic butter Cajun sauce. Perfect for family dinners and special occasions.

Make It a Seafood Boil Experience

One of my favorite parts of making a seafood boil at home is serving it just like a seafood restaurant—but even better because everyone gets exactly what they like.

I cook everything together in one large pot so all of the flavors come together. The only exception is the shrimp. Since someone in our home has a shellfish allergy, I always remove the potatoes, corn, sausage, crab, and mussels first. Then I cook the shrimp separately. It only takes a few extra minutes, but it helps prevent cross-contamination and keeps everyone safer.

Once everything is coated in the garlic butter sauce, I don't dump it all onto the table. Instead, I portion everyone's meal into their own bowl—or, if you want the full seafood boil experience, use clear boil bags. We usually use small pots because everyone likes different combinations. Some want extra crab, others pile on the shrimp, and someone always asks for more sausage.

It's an easy way to make sure everyone gets exactly what they love.

A Fun Family Tip

Want to make dinner feel like a seafood restaurant?

I keep disposable gloves on hand so everyone can dig in without worrying about buttery hands.

Here's another little trick we use at home...

Take a clean plastic grocery bag and cut down both side seams. Then cut the bottom open so it lays flat into one long sheet. Cut a small slit or use the handles to tie it around your neck, and you've got a homemade seafood bib!

It might sound funny, but trust me—it works. Kids usually think it's hilarious, and it saves your shirt from butter and seafood seasoning splatters.

Sometimes the best family memories come from embracing the mess. Put on your gloves, grab your homemade bib, and enjoy dinner together just like you would at your favorite seafood restaurant.

Homemade Seafood Boil

Ingredients

Seafood

  • 2 pounds snow crab legs

  • 2 pounds raw shrimp (peeled or shell-on)

  • 2 pounds fresh mussels

  • 2 smoked sausages, sliced

Vegetables

  • 8–10 baby potatoes

  • 6 ears corn, cut into thirds

Seafood Boil Seasoning

  • 1 stick butter

  • 6 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

  • Juice of 1 lemon

Directions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

  2. Add the potatoes and cook for about 10 minutes.

  3. Add the corn and cook for another 5 minutes.

  4. Add the sausage and snow crab legs.

  5. Stir in the mussels and cook until they begin to open.

  6. Add the shrimp last and cook just until they turn pink, about 2–3 minutes.

  7. Drain everything well.

While the seafood cooks, melt the butter in a saucepan and stir in the garlic, Cajun seasoning, Old Bay, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, and lemon juice.

Pour the butter sauce over the seafood, toss until everything is coated, and serve immediately.

Tips

  • Add shrimp last so they stay tender.

  • Discard any mussels that don't open after cooking.

  • Serve with extra melted butter, lemon wedges, and crusty bread for dipping.

  • Leftovers are delicious tossed into pasta or fried rice the next day.
