Homemade Hot Dog Buns

Hot dogs are one of those meals everyone knows.

But homemade buns completely change the experience.

They're softer than store-bought, taste incredible fresh from the oven, and make even a quick weeknight dinner feel homemade.

Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference.

Whether it's a backyard cookout or dinner after a busy day, fresh buns make every bite just a little better.

Kitchen Tip

Brush the tops with melted butter while they're still warm for an extra soft crust.

🌭 Homemade Hot Dog Buns

Soft, fluffy, freezer-friendly buns that are perfect for hot dogs, sausages, brats, or lobster rolls.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm whey (or warm milk)

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 5½–6½ cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)

For Brushing

  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast

Mix together:

  • Warm whey

  • Sugar

  • Yeast

Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Make the Dough

Mix in:

  • Melted butter

  • Egg

  • Salt

Gradually add flour until a soft dough forms.

Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

3. First Rise

Place dough into a greased bowl.

Cover and let rise 1 hour, or until doubled.

4. Shape the Buns

Divide into 10–12 equal pieces.

Roll each into a rope about 6 inches long.

Flatten slightly with your hand so they bake into the classic hot dog bun shape.

Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart.

5. Second Rise

Cover and let rise another 30–45 minutes until puffy.

6. Bake

Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 14–17 minutes, until lightly golden.

7. Finish

Brush immediately with melted butter.

Cover loosely with a clean towel for about 10 minutes while cooling. This keeps the crust soft.

🌭 Mariposas Tip

Homemade hot dog buns are one of those little upgrades that make an ordinary dinner feel special. They freeze beautifully, so I like making a double batch and pulling out only what we need.

These buns aren't just for hot dogs—they're also perfect for bratwursts, sausages, chili dogs, meatball subs, lobster rolls, and even breakfast sandwiches.

If your hot dogs are extra large, simply divide the dough into 8 pieces instead of 10–12 for bakery-sized buns.

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Rise Time: About 1½ hours
Bake Time: 14–17 minutes
Yield: 10–12 hot dog buns
